Myo for muscle, fascia for the connective tissue that wraps around and supports it — myofascial decompression is a technique that doesn't get talked about as much as it deserves.
Fascia is a web of collagen fibres surrounding and interconnecting every muscle, bone, organ, and nerve in the body — a kind of internal scaffolding. When it's healthy, movement is free; when it tightens up, movement gets restricted, and a tight fascia can compress nerves and hold onto tension.
Myofascial decompression uses specialised cups to create negative pressure (suction) on the skin, lifting the fascial layers and releasing built-up tension. The suction encourages the fascia to loosen its grip on the muscle beneath it, improving blood flow and oxygenation to the area — which supports healing and reduces inflammation.
It's often compared to cupping therapy, and the comparison is fair — myofascial decompression uses the same suction principle but is applied with a specific focus on the fascia itself, aiming to release tension, improve circulation, and support the body's own healing response.
Myofascial release is hands-on — a practitioner uses their hands or tools to apply pressure and manipulate fascial tissue directly. Myofascial decompression instead uses suction to lift and separate the fascial layers. Both aim at the same underlying goal — releasing tension and improving mobility — via different mechanisms.
